From
Emigrante to Canadese:
The Italian-Canadian Project
Ottawa - Hull
14 - 16 May 2004
In conjunction with the Museum of Civilization's exhibit, “PRESENZA
: A NEW LOOK AT ITALIAN-CANADIAN HERITAGE,” the conference
will take stock of the Italian-Canadian experience, its history,
its present condition, and future prospects. Sessions for the conference
include a wide representation from and participation of the Italian-Canadian
community from across the country: professionals, politicians, entrepreneurs,
writers, artists, and intellectuals.
The conference organizers
believe that the time is ripe, fifty years after the beginning of
the post-Second World War mass immigration from Italy to Canada,
and more than one hundred years after the beginning of settlement
of significant numbers of Italian immigrants here, to discuss some
fundamental issues.
Conference Attendance is Free and Open to the Public.
Everyone is Welcome
 Maria
Coletta McLean was awarded the Queen's Golden Jubilee Medal on Sunday
Dec, 8, 2002. Federal Member of Parliament Alan Tonks hosted the
event and had this to say: "It was wonderful to see so many
friends, both new and long-time, with their families enjoying the
recognition that you and your
fellow recipients so rightfully deserve. The Queen's Golden Jubilee
Medal awarded you represents your personal contribution to the local
community and to our nation. I urge you to always display your medal
with pride." The accompanying certificate from the Canadian
Governors General (Adrienne Clarkson) office says, "On the
occasion of the fiftieth anniversary of the
accession of HER MAJESTY THE QUEEN to the throne the Golden Jubilee
Medal is presented to Maria Coletta McLean."
After the ceremony which only allowed four invited guests, Maria
and her family hosted a party at their home for extended family
and friends. It was a remarkable day and Maria feels she shares
her medal with members of the community whose father came from Italy
as well as other countries to make Canada their new home.
